The Israel Press Association on Sunday condemned this weekend's beating of Yediyot Aharonot photographer Atta Awissat, 35, by Border Policemen at a fence protest in Ra'em, north of Jerusalem.
"Any infringement on a journalist fulfilling his duties is an infringement on the public's right to know," a spokesperson for the association told Israel Radio.
Awissat, who lives in Jabel Mukaber in East Jerusalem, was beaten after being mistaken for a Palestinian rioter and subdued by Israeli Border Police. Border Policemen were responding to a Palestinian and Israeli left wing activist riot that involved protesters throwing stones, small steel hammers, and according to one report, an axe. Six arrests were made, including the Israeli who threw the axe.
Awissat claimed to have been left bleeding at the army checkpost for up to ten minutes before an ambulance was called. "The Border Police hit me because I'm an Arab," Awissat said. He is currently listed in light condition.
